Emergency Department
Our nurses are part of a collaborative team of caregivers trained to care for patients from birth through the end of life.
The Emergency Department is an integral component of University Hospital's Level One Trauma system and the Intermountain Burn Referral Center. We are a high acuity ED, treating approximately 37,000 patients annually, with a 25 percent admission rate. The ED is divided into a 21-bed main unit, six-bed Fast Track section, and an 11-bed observation unit. Because of our proximity to nearby Primary Children's Medical Center, the University Health Care ED mainly treats patients 14 and older.
As an ED nurse you can look forward to:
- Working in a great staffing environment, with a 4:1 nurse/patient ratio
- Enjoying significant autonomy through excellent attending physician support
- A work schedule based on seniority and 12-hour shifts. Newly hired nurses can expect to work half their shifts during evening or nighttime. As you obtain seniority, you gain more control over which shifts you work.
- 24-hour support from hospital security and the social work department to help in the care of psychiatric and chemically dependent patients
- Departmental support of Certification in Emergency Nursing through the Emergency Nurses Association
