Search and Assist
We work closely with local Search and Rescue teams, Law Enforcement EMS and fire crews on search and assist missions. If there is an event such as a lost or injured hiker, avalanche, injured skier, or other accident the local agencies can call on us for help. We provide aerial searches, NVG use at night, medical assistance, and victim/ patient extraction. We can also shuttle Search and Rescue personnel to the patient's location if needed.
In the event of an avalanche we are called by local ski patrols and Wasatch Back Rescue (WBR). We launch two aircraft for each mission. The first aircraft to respond deploys a Long Range Receiver (LRR). The LRR is a device that can detect the sonar of an avalanche beacon on a victim from distances up to 200 yards. Once the LRR is suspended form the bottom of the helicopter, a search pattern is flown over the slide area narrowing the search area for the ground crews.
The second aircraft that is dispatched helps in shuttling SAR personnel and search dogs to the slide area. Once a victim is found crews quickly change their roles and begin patient care.
We are testing a new type of avalanche beacon system called RECCO.
