GREAT NEWS: UNIVERSITY OF UTAH HOSPITALS & CLINICS BILLING RECORDS RECOVERED

Statement regarding recovery of stolen backup tapes from Lorris Betz, M.D., Ph.D., Senior Vice President, University of Utah Health Sciences

University Hospitals & Clinics is pleased that the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office has recovered the stolen backup tapes containing billing information.

On July 1, hospital personnel verified that the recovered tapes are the ones that were stolen from the vehicle of a courier for an off-site storage company. Our understanding is that the Sheriff’s office has turned over the tapes to the FBI for forensic examination.

This is great news, and I appreciate the hard work of Sheriff Jim Winder and his team. University Hospitals & Clinics will continue to work closely with law enforcement in the ongoing investigation of this crime. We will post updates as more information becomes available.

We are relieved the tapes have been recovered and regret the concern this incident has caused our patients and their families.
