Peripheral Arterial Disease Treatment Options
Not all PAD requires surgical treatment. The severity of the disease and symptoms dictate the type of treatment which will be recommended to you.
Lifestyle Changes
May reduce the need for future interventions. A regular exercise regime of walking at least 30 minutes at least 3 times a week may help your body improve arterial flow through smaller collateral vessels in your leg. Diabetic control and losing weight will help. Smoking cessation is vitally important.
Medications
May be prescribed to control blood pressure, cholesterol and to reduce the risk of clots.
Balloon Angioplasty and stenting
Non-surgical procedures used to widen arteries that have narrowed due to the build up of plaque. A stent is small metal coil that is permanently implanted in the artery to prevent re-closure.
Peripheral Bypass Surgery
A bypass graft, using either your own vein or a synthetic material, is sewn into place and this new passage redirects blood flow around the area of blockage in your leg.
