Treatments offered at the Vein Clinic

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure during which a solution is injected directly into the vein through a small needle . The solution causes the blood vessel to swell and stick together, and the blood to clot. Over time, the vessel turns into scar tissue that fades, eliminating varicose veins and "spider veins." Sclerotherapy is a well-proven procedure and has been in use since the 1930's.

Vein Stripping

Small incisions are made above and below the damaged area of the vein.   The vein is ligated or tied off with stitches at each incision.  A flexible thin wire (stripping tool) is threaded through the vein and tied to one end.  The tool is then used to pull (strip) the vein from the leg.

Endovascular Laser Therapy

EVLT is a less invasive alternative to vein stripping and is used for treatment of the larger veins in the thigh. During the procedure laser fibers are inserted into the vein through a small needle.  As they are slowly heated, the vein collapses around it and is no longer able to carry blood.  The vein is then able to shrink and disappear.

Phlebectomy

Tiny punctures or incisions are made and veins are removed in small sections. Veins are very collapsible such that even large veins may be removed through the tiny incisions used in this technique. The incisions are very small so no stitches are required and the patient is able to walk following the procedure.  Following treatment, your physician will advice you if bandages or compression stockings should be worn.
