Genetic and Environmental Risk Factors for PSP

This study will determine:
(1) if there is an association between PSP and specific genes of interest;
(2) if there is an association between PSP and occupational and/or environmental chemical exposures functionally or structurally similar to known parkinsonian toxicants;
(3) if hypertension or traumatic brain injury prior to symptom-onset is associated with PSP
A. PSP Cases:- Patient must be diagnosed with PSP (Progressive supranuclear palsy)
- Patient must be new to the site and the site PI or were evaluated by the Site PI for the first time within the past year.
- Patient must be 40 years of age or older
- Patient must be able to visit the screening site to be evaluated by a movement disorder specialist.
- Patient must speak well enough to complete a telephone interview regarding his/her life history
- Patient must have no other major neurological disorders
- Patient must have a spouse or primary caregiver and an age/gender-matched, non-blood relative or neighbor who are willing to participate as controls in the study
- Must not have diagnosis of Parkinson’s or a related disease.
- Age (±5 years) and gender matched non-blood relative of the case (i.e. Inlaws)
- OR Age (±5 years) and gender matched non-blood friend or neighbor
- Must not have diagnosis of Parkinson’s or a related disease.
- Age matched control (±5 years) of the case (i.e. case’s spouse or primary caregiver)
- OR Age matched (±5 years) non-blood relative
