Brief Summary

Objectives

The purposes of our study are (Phase 1) to validate the MR renographic measures of total and single kidney GFR in a population of patients with cirrhosis and (Phase 2) to apply MRR measures of GFR to determine a creatinine-based estimate of GFR for cirrhotic patients (akin to MDRD or Cockcroft-Gault).

Inclusion Criteria

The intended gender distribution of the subjects will be approximately equal; there will be no gender based enrollment restrictions.  The age range of the subjects is 18-95; no children will be recruited, as cirrhosis is a disease of adulthood.  There are no enrollment restrictions based upon race or ethnic origin.

  1. Clinical diagnosis of cirrhosis

Exclusion Criteria

  1. Pregnant patients: Gadolinium chelates are a FDA Category C drug, and therefore should be avoided in pregnancy and are unlikely to undergo routine contrast enhanced MRI
  2. Participant who is unable to lie flat for 60 minutes
  3. Dialysis dependence or eGFR (MDRD calculator) based on serum Cr within 1 month of imaging < 15ml/min/1.73m2
  4. Any history of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis
  5. Unable/unwilling to give informed consent
  6. Medical contra-indications to MRI: pacemakers, implanted defibrillators, cochlear implants, aneurysm clips, and prior/current metal workers.  Patients will be screened with a safety questionnaire
  7. Clinically unstable patients
