Brief Summary

Specific Aim 1:  Self-collected samples using a sterile tampon worn for 1-2 hours or self-collected samples using a sterile Dacron swab will yield equivalent results (Similar number and types of species identified) as samples collected during speculum exam by a healthcare provider.

Specific Aim 2:  Maternal factors will predict alterations in the vaginal microbiome during pregnancy in women with active symptoms of preterm labor.

Inclusion Criteria

  1. Pregnant women > 18 years old
  2. Singleton pregnancy
  3. Gestational age between 20 weeks 0 days and 36 weeks 6 days
  4. Symptoms of preterm labor – presentation to Labor and Delivery for evaluation of potential preterm labor

Exclusion Criteria

  1. Maternal age < 18 years old
  2. Multiple gestation
  3. Placenta previa or other contraindication to vaginal exam
  4. Active vaginal bleeding
  5. Gestational age < 20 weeks 0 days or > 36 weeks 6 days
  6. Premature rupture of the membranes
