Leg ulcers are breaks in the skin of the leg. These breaks or sores let air and bacteria into the tissue of the skin. While for most people these ulcers will heal on their own, people whose skin does not heal as easily may need specialized treatment.
Causes of Leg Ulcers
Leg ulcers are caused by many conditions including:
- Problems with the blood vessels,
- Inflammation of blood vessels,
- Underlying medical diseases, and
- Infections and medications.
Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare cause of leg ulcers created by unchecked inflammation in the skin. The ulcers can grow rapidly, are quite painful, and may worsen despite wound care. Painful non-healing ulcers should be evaluated by a dermatologist or vascular surgeon.
