The Voice Disorders Center at University Health Care is able to provide comprehensive care for all voice disorders as well as laryngeal-based breathing disorders. Our team includes laryngology, speech pathology, vocal pedagogy, and voice research. Specialists from other medical and behavioral disciplines participate as needed. Patients are provided with a thorough evaluation, videolaryngostroboscopy, and well-coordinated treatment plans. The Voice Disorders Center has an outstanding reputation for care of the voice.

Laryngology

Marshall E. Smith, M.D., Associate Professor in the Division of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery is the medical director. He provides full-service care for diseases and disorders of the laryngopharynx. He is the only ENT physician in the intermountain west that provides all of the following services in a single practice.

Speech Pathology

Our speech pathologist have expertise and specific training in laryngeal imaging, evaluation and behavioral treatment of voice disorders. Therapy is provided for all types of voice and breathing disorders, including:

  • Muscle tension dysphonia
  • Vocal fold nodules
  • Neurogenic speech and voice disorders
  • Functional dysphonia
  • Laryngeal-based breathing disorders (paradoxical vocal fold motion)
  • Pre and post surgical voice care

Singing Voice Specialist

We have specialists with special interest in assessing singing technique and caring for singers with vocal injury. We assist with the evaluation and treatment of singers.
