Huntsman Cancer Institute

head neck

Head and neck surgical oncology is the subspecialty of otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat) that deals with the medical and surgical treatment of tumors of the head and neck region. Doctors in this subspecialty treat both benign and malignant tumors with surgery or work with medical oncologists using chemotherapy as well as radiation oncologists using radiation therapy. Because the head and neck area is close to the skull, heart and lungs, head, and neck surgical oncologists can at times work with neurosurgeons or thoracic surgeons, depending on the tumor. The majority of these cases are treated by our team at the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Conditions We Treat

head and neck anatomyCancers that are known collectively as head and neck cancers usually begin in the cells that line the moist, mucosal surfaces inside the head and neck (for example, inside the mouth, the nose, and the throat). These cells are called squamous cells, so cancers in the head and neck are often referred to as squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck. Head and neck cancers can also begin in the salivary glands, but salivary gland cancers are relatively uncommon.

At Huntman Cancer Institute, head and neck cancers are treated by a team of  specialists, including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, endocrinologists, speech therapists, nurses, social workers, dietitians, and other professionals.
