Academic Bio

Christof Westenfelder, MD, FACP, is tenured Professor of Medicine and adjunct Professor of Physiology at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, and Chief, Section of Nephrology at the George E. Wahlen VA Health Sciences Center. As Nephrologist, his research interests include Comparative Physiology, Transport Physiology, Acute Renal Failure, the use of adult Stem Cells for the prevention and treatment of Acute Renal Failure and the cure of Type I Diabetes Mellitus.

Westenfelder’s laboratory has shown in pre-clinical studies that adult Stem Cells, derived from Bone Marrow (Marrow Stroma Cells, MSC) or Adipose Tissue (Adipose Stem Cells, ASC), when administered to animals with experimental acute kidney injury (AKI) protect renal function and augment repair of the organ through complex paracrine actions (anti-apoptotic, mitogenic, anti-inflammatory, angiogenic, immune modulating) rather than through transdifferentiation into lost target cells and their subsequent engraftment. Based on this work, a Phase I Clinical Trial was conducted in patients at high risk for post-op AKI after undergoing on-pump cardiac surgery (CABG, valve repair). Allogeneic MSCs were administered, using a dose escalation protocol, after a given study subject came off pump and was hemodynamically stable. It was documented that this intervention was safe and feasible at all cell doses, that none of the study subjects developed AKI or lost renal function chronically. In addition, length of hospital stay and the need for readmission was reduced compared to well-matched historical controls. To assess efficacy, an adequately powered, double blind, controlled Phase II Trial will be conducted at several study sites. Several patents have been filed that cover the technology that was developed in Westenfelder’s laboratory.

Preclinical studies in Westenfelder’s laboratory have shown that engineered MSCs can cure type I diabetes mellitus in mice and rats. It is expected that within 2-3 years this novel technology will be mature for testing in a Phase I/II Clinical Trial.

Westenfelder has trained numerous post docs, fellows and students in his laboratory. Several of these hold now academic positions. His clinical teaching of students, residents and fellows emphasizes basic sciences (Physiology, Pathophysiology, Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology).
