Estelle S. Harris, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah Health Science Center. As a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician, her clinical interests include general pulmonary consultation, acute lung injury, non-invasive ventilation, neuromuscular abnormalities and diaphragm muscle dysfunction. Dr. Harris received her MD from the University of Colorado. She received training in Internal Medicine at Boston City Hospital, Boston University, and her Pulmonary and Critical Care training from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Harris is the Medical Director of the University of Utah medical intensive care unit (ICU) and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital ICU/intermediate care unit. She is also the pulmonary consultant for the neuromuscular clinics at Neurosciences Center and the NeuRx Diaphragm Stimulator Program. She is currently a member of the American Thoracic Society, The American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Academic Bio

Estelle S. Harris, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah Health Science Center. As a Pulmonary and Critical Care physician her research interests include innate immunity, acute lung injury, early goal-directed therapy in sepsis, translational research in critical care medicine and diaphragm dysfunction. Dr. Harris is involved in several ongoing basic science and translational research projects, serves as a Co-PI on a multicenter NIH trial evaluating early goal-directed therapy in sepsis (ProCESS Trial) and is involved in ICU based Quality Improvement Projects.

Dr. Harris is the director of the University of Utah medical intensive care unit (ICU) and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital ICU/intermediate care unit. She is an active member of the Critical Care, CPR and MICU leadership/QI committees. Dr. Harris is involved with basic science and translational research as an active member of the Vascular Biology Laboratory headed by Drs. Andy Weyrich and Guy Zimmerman. Over the last five years she has published on research topics including; tissue factor mRNA expression in platelets isolated from septic patients, the characterization of the molecular defect in an Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency-1 variant syndrome family, and platelet activation in both sepsis and critically ill patients with H1N1 influenza. Recent translational projects in the laboratory have focused on monocytes, platelets and monocyte-platelet interactions in sepsis and acute lung injury. She is a University of Utah co-PI for the ProCESS trial, a multicenter NIH trial evaluating early goal-directed therapy in sepsis. Lastly, she is part of a multi-specialty group that has started the NeuRx Diaphragm Pacing System Program for placing diaphragmatic pacemakers in patients with high spinal cord injuries and ALS at the University of Utah Health Center. She is currently a member of the American Thoracic Society, The American College of Chest Physicians and the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
