Dr. Swanson majored in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Utah and received his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1992. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and received the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association National Clinical Excellence award in 1995. He is board certified in Emergency Medicine. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Air Medical Physician Association, and on several regional and national committees related to air medical transport. He is the Editor of the Air Medical Journal and an associate editor of the textbook Principles and Direction of Air Medical Transport.
Dr. Swanson was awarded Medical Director of the Year by the Air Medical Physician Association in 2001 and EMS Physician of the Year by the Utah Department of Health in 2002. In 2009 he received the Air Medical Physician Association's Distinguished Physician Lifetime Achievement Award. His research interests include air medical transport, airway management and pain management. He has over 95 articles, book chapters, letters and abstracts published in the fields of emergency medicine and air medical transport.
Dr. Swanson enjoys competitive nordic skiing, alpine and backcountry skiing, climbing and mountaineering, mountain biking, river running, travel and spending time with his family. Dr. Swanson also serves on the physician ski patrol at Snowbird Ski Resort. In 2011 Dr. Swanson placed 14th, 12th and 9th in the world in the 45 K, 30 K and 10 K races at the Cross Country Skiing Masters World Cup. In 2013 he was 3rd in both the 10 K classic and 32 K skate races at the US National Masters Championships for cross country skiing.
