  • Robert Stephenson, MD, is a professor in the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, at the University of Utah, School of Medicine and an Investigator at Huntsman Cancer Institute.     Dr. Stephenson specializes in the treatment of urologic cancers, including prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, testis cancer, adrenal cancer and penile cancer, with the goal of achieving the best possible cancer outcomes and improving overall quality of life for his patients. He has extensive experience in laparoscopic prostate surgery using the robot-assisted DaVinci system.

    Dr. Stephenson received his medical degree from the University of Utah in 1978. He completed an internship at the University of California, Los Angeles; a residence at Stanford University and a fellowship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Following his specialty training, Dr. Stephenson was Director of Urologic Oncology at Tufts University School of Medicine. From there, he went to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Dr. Stephenson joined the faculty of the University of Utah, School of Medicine in 1991.

    Dr. Stephenson has published numerous articles regarding urological oncology, most notably carcinoma of the prostate. He is recognized for the development of animal models for human prostate cancer and for devising surgical methods to improve treatment of high-risk prostate cancer. He has done research using high-technology surgical and radiation therapies to treat prostate and kidney tumors and investigates prostate cancer treatment outcomes in national population-based databases. Dr. Stephenson is also involved in the study of prostate cancer genetic risk factors and prostate cancer tumor marker research.
