Bio

Dr. Schunk received his medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1983 and completed his pediatric residency at University of Utah / Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) and then his fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children Hospital Los Angeles. He joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 1989 and is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Dr. Schunk is a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine and practicing as a Pediatric Emergency Physician at Primary Children’s Medical Center. In the Emergency Department at PCMC Dr. Schunk oversees trainees in Pediatrics, Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine seeing patients with a wide variety of medical, surgical and traumatic conditions. Dr. Schunk was Chief, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine 1998-2010.

Dr. Schunk has been an active investigator in pediatric emergency medicine with specific focus on pediatric foreign body ingestions, pediatric head trauma, and other areas of acute care. He is active in multi-center research through Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN).

Academic Bio

Dr. Schunk received his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Lewis and Clark College and then a medical degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1983. He completed his pediatric residency at University of Utah / Primary Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) and then his fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Children Hospital Los Angeles. He joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 1989 and is board certified in Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Schunk continues his clinical work in the Emergency Department at Primary Children's Medical Center.

Dr. Schunk is a professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah School of Medicine. During his time on faculty he has been the fellowship director, the Medical Director of the ED at PCMC, and Chief, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and serves on the Department Review, Promotion and Tenure Committee. Dr. Schunk has been a mentor for fellows in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and regularly instructs residents, fellows, and medical students. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He has served as Chapter President for the Utah Chapter AAP / Intermountain Pediatric Society. He has received awards for his teaching of Emergency Medicine residents. He now serves as Associate Medical Director, Pediatric Clinial Program for the regional health care system Intermountain.

Dr. Schunk has been an active investigator in pediatric emergency medicine involved in over 30 scholarly publications and 15 chapters with specific focus on pediatric foreign body ingestions, pediatric head trauma, and other areas of acute care. He is active in multi-center research through Pediatric Emergency Care Applied Research Network (PECARN) including pediatric head trauma and diabetic ketoacidosis.
