Bio

Lloyd Y. Tani, MD received both his undergraduate education and his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He received his pediatric and pediatric cardiology training from the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. He is a Professor of Pediatrics and has been a member of the faculty of the University Of Utah School Of Medicine for over 21 years. He currently serves as the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Medical Center.

Dr. Tani’s clinical interests include general pediatric cardiology, rheumatic fever and heart disease, pediatric valvular disease, and echocardiography.

Dr. Tani’s research interests include rheumatic fever and heart disease, quality improvement and outcome, and pediatric echocardiography.

Academic Bio

Dr. Tani received his undergraduate and medical education at the University of California, Los Angeles. After completing postgraduate training in pediatrics and pediatric cardiology at the Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital (Houston, TX), he joined the University Of Utah School Of Medicine Division of Pediatric Cardiology in the Department of Pediatrics in 1989. During his time at the University of Utah and Primary Children’s Medical Center, he has served as the Medical Director of the Echocardiography laboratory from 1990-2004 and as Associate Director of Pediatric Cardiology from 2002-2007. Dr. Tani was appointed Division Chief for Pediatric Cardiology in 2007. He was promoted to the rank of Professor of Pediatrics in 2001 and was named the L. George Veasy Presidential Professor of Pediatrics in 2008.

Dr. Tani’s clinical area of interest and expertise is in pediatric echocardiography, rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease, and in outcomes for congenital heart disease. In addition, he serves as part of the pediatric heart transplant team. His clinical research interests are in the noninvasive assessment of congenital and acquired heart disease in children and in acquired forms of heart disease in children, including rheumatic fever, Kawasaki disease, and endocarditis.

Nationally, Dr. Tani has served as member of the Board of the Pediatric and Congenital Heart Disease Council of the American Society of Echocardiography, as an officer of the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography (including President from 2007-2009), and as a member of both the Committee on Rheumatic Fever, Endocarditis, and Kawasaki Disease and the Leadership Committee of the Council on Cardiovascular Disease in the Young of the American Heart Association.

Dr. Tani has co-authored more than 100 scientific abstracts, more than 100 publications, one book, and 12 book chapters related to areas of clinical research and clinical interest/expertise.
