Bio

E. Dale Abel, M.D., Ph.D. is Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Diabetes at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He is also Medical Director of the Utah Diabetes & Endocrinology Center, Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry and Human Genetics and Investigator of the University of Utah Molecular Medicine Program.

Dr. Abel was recruited to the University of Utah in 2000 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry in 2004, and Professor of Medicine and Biochemistry in 2008. Before that Dr. Abel was on the faculty at Harvard Medical School and co-Director of the Endocrinology Fellowship Program at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. Abel received his Medical Degree with Distinction from the University of the West Indies. He then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, where he obtained his D.Phil in the Nuffield Department of Medicine. After his doctoral studies, Dr. Abel completed internal medicine residency training at Northwestern University in Chicago where he served as Chief Medical Resident. He then moved to the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School for training in Endocrinology. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology.

Dr. Abel’s current research interests focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms leading to cardiac dysfunction in diabetes and the regulation of myocardial growth and metabolism by insulin signaling. Dr. Abel has been the recipient of numerous prestigious scholastic honors, including:

• 2012 Gerald D. Aurbach Award Lecture. International Laureate Award from The Endocrine Society for “outstanding” contributions to endocrinology research
• James A. Pulliam Memorial Lectureship Award 2012 from Meharry Medical College

This year, Dr. Abel was elected Chair of the Board of Scientific Counsellors NIDDK, Chair of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s Scientific Committee 2012 – 2013, Fellow of the American Heart Association and Fellow of The College of Physicians.
