Deirdre Caplin, MS, PhD received her Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from Purdue University School of Science, her PhD in Clinical Child Psychology from Ohio University, and her clinical internship in Pediatric Psychology at the University of Louisville Medical Center. She has been with the Department of Pediatrics Since 2001 and joined the Division of Behavioral Health in 2009.

Dr. Caplin’s clinical practice is focused on the evaluation and treatment of medically ill children and adolescents. She is trained in cognitive-behavioral therapy, clinical pediatric hypnosis, biofeedback and relaxation, and behavioral approaches, with a specific focus on the management of anxiety, disease management issues, pain management, somatoform and conversion disorders. She attends on the Consultation Liaison service at Primary Children’s Medical Center and maintains a small outpatient practice through their Pediatric Behavioral Health Clinic. Dr. Caplin also serves as the director of clinical training for the Division of Behavioral Health as well as the Associate Program Director for Curriculum and Evaluation in the Pediatric Residency Program.

Her research interests mirror her clinical and administrative efforts in resident education, including curriculum development and the use of learning technologies. With her colleagues in Behavioral Health, she is developing a program to monitor children with Conversion and other somatoform disorders, in order to inform clinical care.
