Jonathan Tward, MD, PhD, a Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) physician and investigator, is an associate professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Utah. He is a member of the multidisciplinary genitourinary, and gastrointestinal cancer treatment teams. Tward is one of the co-leaders of the Huntsman Cancer Institute's Prostate Disease Oriented Team (DOT). The mission of the prostate DOT is to advance research collaboration amongst the clinical and basic sciences.

Tward specializes in prostate cancer and other genitourinary malignancies. He is actively engaged in translational, clinical, and outcomes research. His clinical expertise is in delivering intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT), stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT), as well as low-dose-rate and high-dose-rate brachytherapy. He is one of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's (NCCN) Prostate Cancer and Penile Cancer Guidelines panelists.

Tward is also a strong advocate for cancer patients through his annual advocacy efforts in Washington D.C with Utah’s elected federal representatives. Tward is a member of the Institutional Review Board at the Huntsman Cancer Institute. He is also a member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and serves on their congressional relations committee. Tward is also a member of the American Brachytherapy Society, the Utah Medical Association, and numerous other medical societies.

Tward earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He earned a PhD in biochemistry and an MD at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts. He completed a residency in radiation oncology at the University of Utah, and has completed mini-fellowships awarded by the American Brachytherapy Society in both low-dose rate brachytherapy at the Seattle Prostate Institute and high-dose rate brachytherapy at the Texas Cancer Clinic in San Antonio, Texas.

Tward is a board certified member of the American Board of Radiology (Radiation Oncology)

Before joining HCI, Tward served as Founder and CEO of the Multimedia Medical Reference Library, the internet’s first peer-reviewed medical information website, and also served on the Board of Directors for several other e-commerce and health related websites.

We think Dr. Jonathan Tward is an outstanding physician. He is very positive. He was on time. He listened to our questions and gave us thoughtful, insightful, and helpful answers. He took time with us. My wife and I are grateful he is my doctors. We always look forward to seeing him. It was also nice to see other members of the staff. Especially Brennan and Erin who were two of my radiation techs during the seven and a half weeks of radiation.

When I had no hope, Dr Tward soothed, reassured and comforted me. This was very important to my wife. Now, nearly a year later, we are told I may soon be cancer free. The caring I experienced with Dr Tward was as though he was my brother. I am a physician and understand how hard it is, with all the pressures, to make the patient feel like they are all that matters. That is a gift.
