Academic Bio

Dr. Josh Zimmerman is the medical director of the University of Utah Preoperative Clinic as well as a member of the cardiothoracic anesthesia and perioperative echocardiography teams. In his role in the Preoperative Clinic he has organized and systematized the institution's approach to preoperative assessment and management of complex patients. He has developed a protocol for the perioperative management of patients taking antiplatelet agents, drawing on interactions with numerous specialists in the institution. He has also developed a care process for the evaluation and management of patients at risk for obstructive sleep apnea.

Dr. Zimmerman has twice been awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for his work with anesthesiology residents, particulary those studying perioperative echocardiography. He has helped develop the system of echocardiography education that has made the University of Utah the premier location in the country for this training.

Dr. Zimmerman's research interests are in the application of echocardiography (particularly transthoracic echocardiography) to the perioperative period. His current project is an attempt to use a limited preoperative echocardiogram to stratify risk in patients with sleep apnea.
