Bio

Thai M. Cao, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program in the Division of Hematology. As a specialist in hematopoietic stem cell transplantion, his clinical interest includes graft-versus-host disease complications and acute lymphocytic leukemia, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia. His clinical practice resides in Clinic 2B at the University of Utah Huntsman Cancer Institute.

Academic Bio

Thai M. Cao, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program in the Division of Hematology. As a specialist in hematopoietic stem cell transplantion, his research interests includes graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and graft rejection.

Dr. Cao received his medical degree from the University of Kansas. He received clinical training in Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas, in Hematology at Stanford University, and in Bone Marrow Transplantation at Stanford University. He completed research postdoctoral fellowship training in the laboratory of Dr. Judith A. Shizuru at Stanford University. He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Division of Hematology.

His laboratory research focuses on discovering new genes that regulate GVHD and graft rejection. These are the two major clinical problems that complicate clinical allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. He uses a genetic approach to first identify genomic regions by studying GVHD and engraftment resistance in experimental mouse backcrosses. This is then followed by fine mapping through the use congenic mouse strains, and ultimately identification of causative genes by positional cloning. He is working on two gene loci that regulate GVHD, Gvh1 and Gvh2, and one that regulates allogeneic engraftment barriers, Bmgr5. Through novel gene discovery, insight into the biology of GVHD and graft rejection may be gained. He expects that this will lead to direct testing of clinical hypotheses, and new ways for treating or preventing GVHD and graft rejection in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.
