Bio

Doctor Pruitt obtained his baccalaureate at Case Western Reserve University and his doctorate at The Ohio State University School of Medicine. He was trained in general pediatrics at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles of the University of Southern California and in pediatric emergency medicine at The Children’s Hospital Denver of the University of Colorado; he is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both specialties.

He is currently Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Utah and is Medical Advisor for Child Advocacy at Primary Children's Medical Center. His research interests are focused primarily on injury prevention and child advocacy. He is a member of numerous professional and academic societies, has written several scientific articles, textbook chapters, and policy statements, and serves on a variety of national and regional expert and advisory committees including the Utah Children's Health Insurance Program Advisory Council.

He also serves on the boards of directors for Voices for Utah Children, the Utah Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the national office of Injury Free Coalition for Kids. Recently he successfully promoted passage of a statewide booster seat law, developed an innovative water safety program, and coordinated the construction of a state-of-the-art safe playground in South Salt Lake City.

Academic Bio

Doctor Pruitt is Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the University of Utah. He also serves Primary Children's Medical Center as its Medical Director for Child Advocacy.

After obtaining his baccalaureate at Case Western Reserve University and his doctorate at The Ohio State University School of Medicine, Doctor Pruitt completed Pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles of the University of Southern California and Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship at The Children's Hospital Denver of the University of Colorado.

During his tenure as Assistant Professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School (Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters), Doctor Pruitt founded and led the Injury Prevention Work Group at the Center for Pediatric Research. This led to injury prevention grants from the Virginia Department of Health and Eastern Virginia Medical School. Old Dominion University Department of Biology chose Doctor Pruitt to be a visiting Professor and Honors Dissertation Mentor and he mentored several undergraduate research scholars with the Center for Pediatric Research. Doctor Pruitt was awarded a Center for Disease Control - Injury Prevention New Investigator Grant for his Oceanfront Injury Prevention Project.

Continuing his injury prevention research interests, Dr. Pruitt came to the University of Utah where he joined the Injury Free Coalition for Kids as the Principal Investigator/Director of it's Utah chapter and member of it's national board of directors. He was appointed Medical Advisor for Child Advocacy at Primary Children's Medical Center, a position that allowed him to further his water safety interests as he co-produced an innovative children's water safety program for Utah and the Intermountain West. Doctor Pruitt has been awarded grants from Injury Free Coalition for Kids, Columbia University, Little Hands Playgrounds, and Operation Kids. He is the local principal investigator for a multi-center patient safety study conducted under the auspices of the Pediatric Emergency Care Research Network. He has written several scientific articles, textbook chapters, and policy statements. Dr. Pruitt is currently co-directing an advocacy rotation for first year residents of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Utah.
