Bio

Benjamin Gmelch, MD is board certified in anesthesiology, and has specific clinical interests in cardiothoracic anesthesia, regional anesthesia, echocardiography, and perioperative medicine. In addition to clinical and administrative responsibilities at the VA medical center, Dr. Gmelch is a member of the cardiac anesthesia team and works in the pre-anesthesia clinic at the University of Utah. He has extensive training in two heart imaging modalities: perioperative echocardiography (transesophageal echo) and advanced echocardiography (transthoracic echo and stress echo). Dr. Gmelch is enthusiastic about the unique and crucial role of anesthesiologists as perioperative physicians, optimizing the care of each patient through evidence-based medicine, and customizing that care through experience, compassion, and sound medical judgement.
