  • Dr. Stephen H. Sams is currently an Associate Professor in the clinical track in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Utah. Dr. Sams received his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry with a minor in biological anthropology from the University of Michigan. He went on to receive his Doctor of Medicine degree from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. He then completed his residency training in Anesthesiology at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. After residency Dr. Sams completed a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at The Ohio State University followed by another fellowship in Perioperative Echocardiography at the University of Utah. After completion of his fellowship he was appointed to the clinical faculty.

    Dr. Sams splits his time clinically between providing general anesthesia in the operating room and working as an intensivist in the Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU). In addition, he enjoys teaching residents and medical students in the operating room and ICU. He is also involved with resident education, didactics, workshops, and simulation. Dr. Sams is a Core Educator for the medical students at the School of Medicine. He currently serves as the Assistant Course Director for the Transition to Internship course for the 4th year medical students. Dr. Sams also serves as the Course Director for the Critical Care Medicine Course for the 4th year medical students. Dr. Sams serves as an Assistant Program Director for the University of Utah Anesthesiology Residency. Dr. Sams also serves as the Fellowship Program Director for the newly formed Anesthesiology Critical Care Medicine Fellowship.
