What is sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid oral topical solution?

SULFONATED PHENOLICS; SULFURIC ACID ORAL TOPICAL SOLUTION (Debacterol®) is applied to the inside of the mouth (oral mucosa)to treat canker sores, certain types of gingivitis, and other oral ulcers/ lesions. Sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution is available without a prescription. Generic sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution is not yet available.

What should my health care professional know before I use sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • herpes infection, like cold sores or fever blisters

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to sulfonated phenolics, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding.

How should I use this medicine?

Your health care professional may apply sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution to the lesion in your mouth, or you may apply it yourself. Sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution is for use on lesions inside the mouth only. Avoid contact with normal, healthy areas in the mouth. Do not swallow the solution.

Prior to use, dry the oral lesion very carefully with a cotton swab. Dip a cotton tipped applicator into the sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution. Apply the solution with the cotton tipped applicator directly to the oral lesion and hold it there for 5—10 seconds. While you are applying the solution to the lesion, roll the applicator around to make sure you cover the entire area of the lesion. Afterwards, completely rinse your mouth with water and spit out the water. Probe the area around the lesion with your tongue. If you still feel the type of pain associated with the lesion, the lesion was not completely treated. Immediately apply the solution to the area of the lesion that was missed. Following the second application, completely rinse your mouth with water and spit out the water. Treatment should not be repeated on the same lesion on successive days. A lesion should not be retreated unless it has completely healed, but has reappeared.

Do not use sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution for herpes virus infections of the face and mouth (cold sores or fever blisters).

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. Do not apply this medicine to infants.

What if I miss a dose?

This does not apply, sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution is not for regular use. Do not use this medicine on the same mouth sore two days in a row.

What drug(s) may interact with sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid?

Sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution is not known to interact with other medicines. However, if you are using other medications that are applied to the inside of your mouth, use them 10 minutes before or after using sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, skin products, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid?

Contact your prescriber if your condition does not improve with the use of this midicine.

Do not use sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution in the eyes or on the eyelids. If accidental contact occurs, large amounts of water should be used to rinse the eye and you should contact your health care professional or a poison control center immediately.

Do not swallow this medicine. If sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid solution is swallowed, drink large amounts of water or milk and call a poison control center immediately.

What side effects may I notice from using sulfonated phenolics; sulfuric acid?

Side effects that you should report to your doctor as soon as possible:

  • worsening of your oral lesions

  • severe stinging or burning on the inside of the mouth that does not go away after you completely rinse your mouth with water

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):

  • stinging at the site of application

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children.

Store at room temperature between 15—30 degrees C (59—86 degrees F); do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date on the label.
