Patient Assistance

Purpose

To assist and support the staff of 6 North and 6 South in "comfort care" for patients and their families.

Qualifications

Open to all Health Sciences students and adults (Must be 18 or over)

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Complete department orientation prior to first volunteer shift

  • Introduce self as a volunteer to the staff and patients

  • Orient new patients and their families to their room--lights, TV, call button, bathroom, wipe-off board, telephone number, visiting hours, etc.

  • Escort patients being discharged, as needed

  • Make patient rounds, offer assistance

  • Assist patients with limitations with meals, as requested

  • Assist family members needing direction to the cafeteria, Starbucks, pharmacy, or other areas of the hospital

  • Escort patients during walking on the units

  • Give assistance to clerical staff when requested

  •  Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times
