University Hospital promotes a family friendly environment. We understand that visitors are important to the healing process and we encourage family and friends to visit. For the comfort and well-being of all our patients, we ask that visitors follow the guidelines listed below.

Information Desks

There are Information Desks located at each of the hospital's two entrances as well as in the main hospital lobby. They serve as a resource for patients, families and visitors. Staff and volunteers provide information regarding lodging accommodations, transportation and restaurants and can arrange for services such as interpreters, clergy and notaries public. Visiting Hours & Guidelines

  • Visiting hours are flexible and designed to meet the needs of the individual patient. Please contact the appropriate nursing station with specific questions regarding the patient you are visiting.
  • Intensive Care Units limit visitors to 2 individuals at a time. Visitors are not allowed between 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. (when "change of shift report" is occurring) and during procedures.
  • Labor and Delivery Suites welcome the father of the baby or designated other adult to be present during labor and delivery. Visitors are welcome at anytime.
  • The immediate family of pre-procedure or pre-surgery patients may visit as early as they wish on the morning of surgery.
  • Please keep noise to a minimum by limiting the number of visitors. We ask that visitors respect patients' privacy and step out of the room when care is given or when asked.
  • Please ask that your family and friends do not visit if they are ill with an infectious disease, such as a cold or flu.
  • Children are welcome to visit, however it is important that they are supervised by an adult. To avoid exposing the patient to illness, please do not bring sick children into the nursing unit.
  • We (University Hospital) recognize the important part animals play in healing. Family pets may visit. Please make arrangements with the patient's physician or nurse. Our Volunteer Services department offer visitation from a certified pet therapy dog or cat if your pet is unable to visit.
  • Flowers and for patients are welcome except in the intensive care units. Only Mylar balloons are permitted in all patient rooms. Latex balloons pose a danger to people with Latex allergies and present a potential choking danger to children.
  • The use of cell phones is prohibited in some areas because they may interfere with monitoring equipment.

Surgical Waiting Area Guidelines

We understand that providing high-quality care includes providing the best possible service to our patients' families and visitors. To ensure your comfort, we ask that the Surgical Waiting Area visitors observe the following guidelines:

  • Please check-in and out with the Surgical Waiting Area Volunteer when you arrive and leave the area.
  • The Surgical Waiting Room Nurse Liaison or Volunteer will notify you when the patient has arrived in the Recovery Room.
  • Patients usually remain in the Recovery Room for a minimum of 2 hours. This length of time varies for each patient and can take up to 4 hours. Please remember that when you speak with the doctor, the patient probably has not yet arrived in the Recovery Room.
  • When the Patient is assigned a hospital room, the Nurse Liaison or Volunteer will notify you.
  • Information about your health is private and strictly confidential. HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) is part of a new government Privacy Act that is designed to protect the privacy of your personal health information. Except in special circumstances, visitors are not allowed in the Recovery Room.
  • To help us help make your experience at the Surgical Waiting Area as pleasant and comfortable as possible, we ask all visitors to kindly keep the noise level down.
