Who Should Get Screened?

  • Current or former smoker between 55 and 74 years of age.
  • History of at least 30 "pack years" of smoking. (A pack year equals the number of packs smoked per day times the number of years the patient smoked; two packs a day for 10 years equals 20 pack years.)
  • No history of any cancer within the past five years.
  • Former smokers must have quit within the past 15 years

Learn more about the NIH study:

Now Available, CT Screening for Lung Cancer

In order to detect lung cancer in high-risk individuals, Huntsman Cancer Institute, under the direction of the Thoracic Oncology Program, is now offering low-radiation-dose CT (computed tomography) screening for lung cancer. A recent National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) found 20 percent fewer lung cancer deaths among trial participants screened with CT scans. The for the first time a study has linked a screening to reducing mortality. To find out more about the screening or to make an appointment, call us today. The sooner lung cancer is detected the better the chances for long-term survival.

What is low-radiation-dose CT Screening

Unlike regular CT scans that require an IV and contrast dye, lung screening CT scans use a lower dose of radiation and are non-contrast (no intravenous (IV) contrast dye required). A CT scan is more sensitive than a normal X-ray image allowing Huntsman Cancer Institute specialists to get the most accurate and complete diagnosis possible.

After your CT scan is complete, your results will be shared with you and your primary care physician if requested. If follow up care is necessary, a coordinator from the Huntsman Cancer Institute will assist you in arranging an appointment to discuss treatment options.
