Sigma Chi

Sigma Chi logoOn April 12, 2013, Sigma Chi members presented the one-millionth dollar raised for cancer research at Huntsman Cancer Institute to Significant Sig and Order of Constantine Sig Jon M. Huntsman, Sr., PENNNSYLVANIA 1959. In December 2012, Sigma Chi designated the Huntsman Cancer Foundation as its sole preferred philanthropic partner.

The Derby Challenge
The Derby Challenge, an online competition between the chapters of Sigma Chi. Chapter winners are announced each year at Balfour Leadership Training Workshop. The Challenge runs annually from August 1 to July 31.

  1. GET ONLINE: Sign up for the Derby Challenge, if you haven’t already.  There, you will find a way to register on the left hand side and create your page, once created, you will invite the sororities on campus to join your team. The plan is simple, have each brother send 10 fundraising e-mails, and ask each sorority to do the same.
  2. CREATE COMPETITION: Use the Derby Challenge web site to recruit donations and create a point total for sororities vying for the winner (competition definitely helps).
  3. CONNECT WITH OTHERS: Join the Facebook group to swap ideas .
  4. INFUSE EMOTION: Use the videos we created to create the emotional appeal:  This is a story (Jon M. Huntsman, Sr.’s story + all of us), The Derby Dollar (what a dollar can do), and  Everyone Contributes at HCI (Research examples).  Ask brothers to dedicate their “derby dollar” to someone battling or who has battled cancer.  Take a video and play it.  Create a fish tank with the HCF/Sigma Chi logo on it and monitor progress.  Ask brothers to share their stories and dedicate your efforts to someone you love.

Sigma Chi brick paverBrick pavers are placed in the Walk of Hope between the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the Huntsman Cancer Hospital for chapters raising $1,000 or more. Sigs tour this area every year when they visit while participating in HORIZONS. All chapter donations more than $1,000 trigger the creation of a brick for the chapter, which is created automatically. If you want to make a donation for other bricks in the Sigma Chi section, please contact Julie Anderson at (801) 584-5881.

If you are a Sigma Chi chapter member and are interested in holding an event to raise funds for HCF, please contact our Sigma Chi liaison at least 90 days before the event for approval. After approving the event, HCF can provide marketing materials such as logos and letterhead. HCF cannot provide monetary support for events.
