Echo is currently involved in several projects with Dr. Kepka working with at-risk populations to improve cancer screening and preventive behaviors. For example, she has helped facilitate the Latina Cancer Screening Project, scheduling Latina’s who are overdue for breast, cervical, or colorectal cancer screening by partnering with Prevention Care Managers from Alliance Community Services and Comunidades Unidas. She has also helped conduct focus groups and surveys with parents of Latino adolescents ages 11-17 about their attitudes, beliefs, and decisions about the HPV vaccine. She has also been involved in a project assessing cancer screening among HIV/AIDS patients with Dr. Kepka and Dr. Sara Simonsen. 

Echo completed her Master in Public Health and Bachelor of Science in Behavioral Science and Health at the University of Utah. In the fall of 2014, she is excited to continue working with Dr. Kepka and Dr. Anne Kirchhoff as she starts a doctoral program at the University of Utah College of Nursing where she will focus on cancer prevention and survivorship among adolescent and young adults. Echo enjoys spending time with her husband in the beautiful outdoors and loves running, hiking, backpacking and all that Utah has to offer.


Djin Lai

Djin assists Deanna with a variety of research activities such as literature searches, IRB applications, study coordination, data analysis and other administrative tasks, including preparation of powerpoints, writing, and collating of study materials and presentations. She is currently assisting Deanna in coordinating a community based participatory research project investigating parental attitudes and beliefs about the HPV vaccine among parents of adolescents from diverse and underserved populations. She also is involved in data analysis on a study investigating Latino parents’ knowledge and awareness about the HPV vaccine.

Djin is currently in the PhD program at the College of Nursing at the University of Utah where she explores cancer communication from the cultural perspective. Djin also enjoys playing with her 3 children and going on road trips.

Holdunn

Holdunn Rutkoski

Holdunn Rutkoski is a volunteer research assistant with the Kepka Group. He received a MPH from Westminster College and will begin dental school this fall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has a passion for oral epidemiology and works with the Kepka Group on research related to HPV and oropharyngeal cancer.


Brynn Fowler

Brynn Fowler received her Master in Public Health degree from the University of Utah in December of 2014. In Brynn’s Master’s training she focused on global health, community engaged research, health behavior, and cancer prevention.


Ryan Mooney

Ryan has a bachelor’s degree in psychology and is interested in genetic counselling. He is actively involved in research with Dr. Kepka’s studies in various roles, working with quantitative and qualitative data entry, coding, and analysis and presentation of findings at professional conferences.

Julia Bodson

Julia Bodson
Summer Research Assistant

Julia is currently involved with data analysis on projects investigating Latina’s perspectives on cervical cancer and Latino parents’ knowledge and awareness about the HPV vaccine. She is also assisting Deanna with an interventional research project that aims to improve cancer screening behaviors among hotel and cleaning employees.

Julia grew up in Salt Lake City and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Statistics and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She is happy and excited to return to the team for the summer of 2014!


Guadalupe Tovar

Guadalupe Tovar
Patient Navigator and Outreach Coordinator at Huntsman Cancer Institute

Guadalupe is actively involved in the Hispanic community. She works closely with Deanna in her research with the Hispanic population in Utah.

Guadalupe is originally from Mexico, and is effectively bilingual in Spanish and English. She offers her insight to the Hispanic culture to guide in the research development process in projects with the Hispanic community, and also facilitates focus groups on several studies.

Guadalupe is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah in International Studies with a minor in Anthropology, and enjoys meditation, reading, and gardening in her free time.

Ryan is the administrative assistant for the Kepka team. He recently joined the group and is responsible for managing the administrative tasks, budgeting, and grant support for the Kepka Team. He is happy to be at Huntsman Cancer Institute!
