Comparing modalities of internet based support for caregivers of rural Veterans with dementia (SCORE) 2010-2014 Examining  the use and impact of different decision support platforms that vary in intensity of information interactivity and technological complexity based on evaluation of  the effectiveness of various platforms for delivering caregiver support, to learn valuable information about implementing consumer focused technologies in older populations and measuring the subsequent health outcomes that can be expected for patients and their caregivers.

Using Community Hotlines for Rural Needs Assessment 2011-2012 This collaboration with the VA Caregiver Support Line analyzes the demographics and needs of rural and highly rural callers to the VA Caregiver Support Line. www.caregiver.va.gov/
Examination of High Transportation and Fee Basis Users 2012-2013 This study focused on the needs of rural veterans who have to either travel long distances to access care at a VA center, or who need to have the VA arrange for care with non-VA providers. Rich E. Nelson, PhD

Four Corners American Indian Patient Navigator Outreach Program 2010-2013 This HRSA funded study built on previous cancer navigation work by partnering with a clinic system serving American Indians residing in frontier areas.  In addition to cancer navigation, navigators embedded in the clinic provided navigation for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
Reducing Cancer Disparities Among Frontier American Indians in the Intermountain West 2006-2011 This CMS funded demonstration program was a randomized trial of lay community patient navigation versus education for cancer screening, diagnosis, and care.  Over 1700 participants across tribal lands throughout the Intermountain West enrolled in the study.
Connecting Rural Veterans to the Utah Aging and Disability Resource Connection for Information and Referral and Options Counseling Services (ADRC) 2013-Current Provides training and support to Aging and Disability Resource Centers that will enable them to provide more effective options counseling to Veterans and their families, with the additional benefit of linking key VA contacts with community resources to provide improved coordination of resources.
