Beta Blocker Effect on Remodeling and Gene Expression (BORG)

Study Description

This study examines changes myocardial gene expression associated with related alterations in myocardial function and remodeling, and specifically with carvedilol, metoprolol or metoprolol plus doxazosin-related reversal of myocardial dysfunction and remodeling.

Participant Eligibility

Inclusion Criteria:
  1. Age Range: > 18 years
  2. Patients with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy must have symptoms of New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class II, III or IV congestive heart failure (CHF) at the time of randomization.  Left ventricular diastolic diameter index (LVIDd) should be greater than 3.0 cm/m as measured by two-dimensional echocardiography (2-D Echo).  Patients must have a coronary arteriogram performed within at least two years of enrollment that does not exhibit occlusive (> 50 % narrowing of any major epicardial coronary artery) and be free of a clinical history consistent with coronary artery disease (CAD)
Exclusion Criteria:

Patients currently treated with carvedilol > 3.125 mg bid.
