Alzheimer's Disease
The University of Utah Center for Alzheimer’s Care, Imaging and Research (CACIR) is the most comprehensive Alzheimer’s program in the Intermountain West. The Center hopes to improve dementia care by combining education and awareness with the latest advances in research and imaging technology.
“The Center is designed to take advantage of the significant advances in dementia research and to get those advances into the community,” explains Center Director, Dr. Norman L. Foster.
The Center’s specialty clinic does just that. Every patient who visits the Cognitive Disorders Clinic benefits from the latest technologies and receives care from an expert health care team--including a neurologist, neuropsychologist and technician, health educator, and medical social worker. They work closely with referring physicians to provide an accurate diagnosis and personalized management plan for each patient and their family.
Early and accurate detection of Alzheimer’s is the key to successful treatment. If someone you know has memory problems that interfere with daily life, encourage them to see their doctor--the sooner the better. If their physician feels it is appropriate, they may refer them to CACIR. To learn more about referring patients, physicians can call (801) 585-6387 or visit the Center’s website at www.utahmemory.org.
The Center hopes to improve Alzheimer’s care through research. By collaborating with other universities and testing new drugs, they are getting closer to finding new and more effective treatments for Alzheimer’s. This is possible through help from volunteers, who generously give their time to participate in research studies. To learn more about volunteering for Alzheimer’s research, you can express your interest online at www.utahmemory.org. After entering your information, a member of CACIR’s research team will contact you with more details.
