Student Internships
The Nursing Student Internship Program is designed to help support your education and development as a nurse. Our goal is to reinforce your educational experience by providing additional clinical learning opportunities to ease the transition to nursing practice. The program is a partnership between University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics and the Colleges of Nursing at the University of Utah and Westminster College.
As an intern, you will work under the direct supervision of a registered nurse and a unit preceptor who will oversee your clinical and professional skill development. You will be required to attend a special program orientation and educational classes in addition to working on your unit.
- Nursing Student Interns Level One are paid an hourly wage of $11.00.
- If you complete all requirements of a Level One, you will advance to a Nursing Student Intern Level Two at the same hourly wage of $11.00 an hour.
- Interns working at least 20 hours a week may qualify for benefits, including medical and dental insurance.
- Interns working a minimum of 24 hours a week may qualify for tuition reimbursement.
Minimum Requirements
- Current enrollment in the nursing program at the University of Utah or Westminster College
- Completion of the first semester in the nursing program
- Verification of never working as a Licensed Practical Nurse (taking the test to be an LPN or having an LPN license is approved as long as you have never worked one day as an LPN)
What You Will Commit To as a Nursing Student Intern
- Working a minimum of one 8-hour shift per week. Specific schedules vary by unit and will be determined between you and the nurse manager. As an intern, you must be willing to work some evenings and weekend shifts.
- Attending all required orientation and education classes for interns.
- Working two years full-time on an inpatient unit upon graduation from the nursing program. If this commitment is not fulfilled, you will be required to pay back a pro-rate amount for your training as an intern.
How to Apply
- Review the minimum requirements for an intern as listed above.
- If you meet the minimum requirements, watch for job openings on the Nurse Recruitment Website (from the homepage, click on Apply Online, then View Job Postings, then change the job category to Nursing and Nurses Aides and look for Nursing Student Intern openings). Job openings are posted for a minimum of seven days, so checking the website once a week is advised.
- If you have any questions about a specific job posting, contact the nurse recruiter listed in the posting comments section at the bottom.
- After applying online, a nurse recruiter will be in touch with you to discuss the position and to possibly set up an interview with the nurse manager.
