What You Can Do To Prepare For Surgery

Joint Camp is an extensive pre-operative education program for the patient and their family. It is a program dedicated to the comprehensive care of hip replacement and knee replacement patients with the University of Utah. This presentation is free of charge at the Orthopaedic Center on Wednesdays and is available here online also. Call your surgery scheduler to set up a time to come to the joint camp in person.

Because you are the most important participant in your recovery, we encourage you to receive the most comprehensive education available prior to surgery.

joint camp

We know joint replacement patients are anxious to return to their active, independent lifestyles, so joint camp is designed to give you the information you need to make the best decisions in relation to recovery. Therefore, if you are able come to the orthopaedic center prior to surgery, we invite you to attend in-person. Joint camp is also presented by our knowledgeable physical therapists and representatives from the U of U pharmacy and thrombosis service who will be taking care of you while you are in the hospital (whether surgery is at the main hospital or the UOC). Knowing this information before surgery helps you to have the best experience possible.

Helpful tips you will learn at joint camp include the following:

  • What to expect before, during and after surgery
  • Tips on preparing your house to accommodate your recovery
  • Effects of medication and anesthesia
  • Blood clot prevention
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation services for an excellent outcome

When you are in the hospital, medications and anesthesia can often cloud your memory, so if you are taught the things you need to know before surgery with a clear head, and your spouse or friend can learn these things too, your outcome can be optimized.
