Abbott Blood Glucose Meter Display Problems

September 13, 2007

Abbott has issued a warning regarding the following glucometers manufactured after January 31, 2007: Kroger®, Rite Aid®, Ultima, ReliOn®, Optium™, and Precision Xtra™. Display screens for these meters may not work properly if they are dropped on a hard surface. This may result in patients not being able to view blood glucose readings and could lead to hyper- or hypoglycemia.

Abbott is advising patients to use wallets that are provided with meters to provide extra protection. Patients should check their meter displays if they drop their meters on a hard surface. The Users Guide for each meter has instructions for performing a display check. If the display is still functioning properly, the patient may continue to use the meter.

Patients should call Abbott Diabetes Care at 1-877-844-4404 if their meter display is not properly functioning or if they would like to know when their meter was manufactured. There have been no injuries associated with this product defect.
