PGY2 Pharmacy Residency
Program Description
The pharmacy informatics residency program offers a one-year PGY2 certificate or a two-year program that offers a PGY2 certificate and a masters degree in Medical Informatics or Public Health. The resident receives training on a variety clinical applications that impact patient care. The purpose of the residency is to develop pharmacy practitioners with marketable job skills in clinical informatics and automation. They also develop a working knowledge of medication information systems and their design, development, and integration into clinical practice. This training experience is provided in conjunction with TheraDoc, Inc.
Program Goals
- To train leaders in pharmacy informatics practice with specialized knowledge in both clinical informatics and automation.
- Develop expertise in technology assessment, implementation, and workflow integration.
Highlights of Experience
Rotations will vary depending upon the needs of the resident. Rotation opportunities are available in a wide variety of clinical areas, IT technical operations, automation experiences, knowledge engineering, and drug information. The resident benefits from the collaborative relationship between the University and Theradoc and from the flexibility in rotation scheduling.
Qualifications
Candidates must graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree (or equivalent combination of education and clinical experience) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Residents must have completed an accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program, and must have graduated from a PGY1 residency OR have comparable experience as a pharmacist. Applicants must be eligible for Utah licensure and are expected to obtain licensure as a pharmacist in Utah within the first 60 days of the start of the program year.
Recruitment and Selection
The following information must be submitted by the first Friday in January for the applicant to be considered for an onsite interview:
- Curriculum vitae
- Letter of intent
- Completed application form
- College of pharmacy transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation

Completed applications are reviewed, and competitive applicants are invited to attend an on-site, full-day interview in January or February. The program participates in the Resident Matching Program of ASHP.
Salary and Benefits
Pharmacy residents are classified as full-time, benefited employees of the University of Utah. They are paid a competitive salary and also receive a benefits package that includes health, dental and life insurance, and various staff discounts. Residents are allowed 10 days of vacation leave, 2 personal preference days, and 10 holidays. Residents are afforded travel benefits to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting each December and the Western States Residents Conference held each spring.
