PGY2 Pharmacy Residency
Program Description
The critical care residency offers required experiences in surgical, medical, burn/trauma, and neurology/neurosurgery intensive care. Many elective experiences are available including emergency services, transplant, infectious disease, and newborn intensive care. Residents are actively involved in the training of PGY1 residents and pharmacy students. They also work on clinical research projects during the year. The program is ASHP accredited.
Program Goals
- To train highly sophisticated critical care practitioners that will serve as leaders in clinical practice and policy and protocol development.
- Effectively identify and solve medication problems related to critically ill patients.
- Systematically and methodically monitor critically ill patients for efficacy of drug therapy and possible adverse drug events.
Highlights of Experience
The critical care residency offers a wide array of rotations with various patient populations including burn, neurology and neurosurgery, solid organ and bone marrow transplant, infectious disease, very low birth weight neonates, and emergency service patients. The hospital is a Level I trauma center, accredited Stroke Center, and home of the Intermountain Burn Center. Up to 4 weeks may be spent on an ICU rotation in an outside facility. Residents are integrated into a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, dietary specialists, and social workers.
Qualifications
Candidates must graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree (or equivalent combination of education and clinical experience) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Residents must have completed an accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program. Applicants must be eligible for Utah licensure and are expected to obtain licensure as a pharmacist in Utah within the first 60 days of the start of the program year.

The following information must be submitted by the first Friday in January for the applicant to be considered for an onsite interview:

- Letter of intent
- Completed application form
- College of pharmacy transcripts
- Three letters of recommendation

Completed applications are reviewed, and competitive applicants are invited to attend an on-site, full-day interview in January or February. The program participates in the Resident Matching Program of ASHP.
Salary and Benefits
Pharmacy residents are classified as full-time, benefited employees of the University of Utah. They are paid a competitive salary and also receive a benefits package that includes health, dental and life insurance, and various staff discounts. Residents are allowed 10 days of vacation leave, 2 personal preference days, and 12 holidays. Residents are afforded travel benefits to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting each December and the Western States Residents Conference held each spring.
