PGY2 Pharmacy Residency
Program Description
The oncology and hematology residency program at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital and the University of Utah is a structured and directed one year training program at an academic National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated medical center. The program develops an extensive knowledge base and problem-solving skills through an array of clinical experiences in both acute and ambulatory care. The program helps residents develop knowledge and skills to achieve competency in an oncology environment, they will be involved in maintaining and improving oncology practice by providing pharmacy services in the various areas. Upon completion of the residency, the pharmacist will be well-prepared to practice in a variety of oncology settings. Program Goals
- To develop sophisticated oncology and hematology practitioners who will be leaders in this specialized practice of pharmacy.
- Attain a level of practice knowledge that will allow a passing the exam to become a Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist.
Highlights of Experience
The resident will gain experiences in both inpatient and outpatient hematology/oncology and bone marrow transplant. Electives include infectious disease, pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant, pain and palliative care, investigational drug services and drug information among others. Residents participate in a longitudinal ambulatory care clinic for six months in hematology followed by 6 months in oncology. Residents participate in weekly oncology resident sessions and also learn the fundamentals of the biology of neoplastic disease through a variety of experiences including a methodical review of Biology of Cancer by Robert A. Weinstein. Teaching opportunities are also available in the form of one-on-one teaching, college lectures and a teaching certificate program is also available.
Qualifications
Candidates must graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree (or equivalent combination of education and clinical experience) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Residents must have completed an accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program. Applicants must be eligible for Utah licensure and are expected to obtain licensure as a pharmacist in Utah within the first 60 days of the start of the program year.

The following information must be submitted by the first Friday in January for the applicant to be considered for an onsite interview:

- Three letters of recommendation

Completed applications are reviewed, and competitive applicants are invited to attend an on-site, full-day interview in January or February. The program participates in the Resident Matching Program of ASHP.
Salary and Benefits
Pharmacy residents are classified as full-time, benefited employees of the University of Utah. They are paid a competitive salary and also receive a benefits package that includes health, dental and life insurance, and various staff discounts. Residents are allowed 10 days of vacation leave, 2 personal preference days, and 12 holidays. Residents are afforded travel benefits to attend the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting each December and the Western States Residents Conference held each spring.
