Pharmacotherapy Outcomes Research Rotation

Site Description:
The Pharmacotherapy Outcomes Research Center (PORC) was established in 2002 at the University of Utah's College of Pharmacy in Salt Lake City, Utah. Our vision is to be recognized internationally for outstanding contribution to improved patient care via outcomes research and assessment.
Our mission is to facilitate the interaction of academia and patient care systems in the conduct of outcomes research, the presentation and publication of results, training of healthcare professionals and facilitating the utilization of outcomes research information to improve patient care. We contract with the pharmaceutical industry, foundations, managed care organizations and government to conduct the following types of projects:
Patient Registries and observational studies
Resource utilization and cost analyses
Economic modeling
Cost-effectiveness studies
Retrospective analyses
Development and review of AMCP Economic Dossiers
Rotation Description:
Through interactions with PORC faculty, the resident will be exposed to health outcomes research projects at a variety of stages of development. In addition to assisting with health outcomes research projections, the resident will be assigned various readings and review the material with PORC faculty. The readings will include the following content areas:
Introduction to pharmacoeconomic analysis
Pharmacoeconomic tools used in formulary decision making

Readings and Preparatory Work:
Resident will be assigned two outcomes research articles and an AMCP Formulary Dossier (Economic Model Section) to read and review.
Project/Presentation Description:
The resident will give two presentations to the PORC faculty. One presentation will be a critique of one of the two assigned outcomes research articles. The second presentation will be based on the written outcomes research proposal that the resident developed. The proposal will include the following sections: objective, study methodology including data source, analysis plan and statistical methods, budget and timeline.
Typical Daily/Weekly/Monthly Activities:
The resident will meet daily with one of the PORC faculty to discuss the various assigned readings and to monitor progress on projects assigned. Resident will have ample time to develop their two presentations and their research proposal. PORC faculty will be available for ad hoc consultation.
Evaluation:
The resident will receive verbal feedback on their participation and work on projects. A final summative evaluation will be discussed and recorded in ResiTrak.
