Solid Organ Transplant

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency

Program Description

The solid organ transplant program is an organized, directed, and accredited postgraduate training program specifically designed to develop a high-level clinical practitioner. The program provides advanced training to a clinical pharmacist to assure that excellent pharmaceutical care is provided to solid organ transplant recipients in both the acute care and ambulatory care settings. The resident serves as a liaison between the surgery, nephrology, hepatology, cardiology, pulmonology services and the department of pharmacy services. Additionally the resident will develop skills as an educator, clinical researcher, and published writer.

Program Goals

  • To train highly sophisticated transplant practitioners that will serve as leaders in transplant pharmacy and the profession.
  • Develop expertise in identifying medication problems in solid organ transplant patients and communicating rational, evidence-based recommendations to solve these problems.

Highlights of Experience

The solid organ transplant residency at the University of Utah is one of only a few ASHP-accredited solid organ transplant residencies in the United States. Graduates of our residency have gone on to careers in academia, clinical practice, research and pharmaceutical industry. The medical staff actively participates in residency training. The resident will have the unique experience of not only participating in the care of heart, lung, liver, kidney and pancreas transplant recipients, but will be part of a comprehensive specialty pharmacy service line.

Candidates must graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy program with a doctor of pharmacy degree (or equivalent combination of education and clinical experience) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Residents must have completed an accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program. Applicants must be eligible for Utah licensure and are expected to obtain licensure as a pharmacist in Utah within the first 60 days of the start of the program year.
