Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Microvascular Reconstruction of Ischemic Extremities
Microvascular reconstruction involves a technique where the surgeon works with the smallest blood vessels. These small blood vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients to extremities, such as the hands. When the blood flow or blood vessels are cut off or smothered (called ischemia), the body part can become diseased or damaged. This is why the surgeon works very carefully to reattach or repair these small blood vessels.
From largest to smallest, these blood vessels are called capillaries, arterioles and venules.
