Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Skin malignancies, or cancer of the skin, are the abnormal growth of skin cells. If you think that you have a suspicious looking mole or change in an area of your skin, you should contact your physician. Detecting skin malignancies early on will help you and your specialist treat the malignancy quickly and effectively.
Treatment for skin cancer depends on the size, type, depth and location of the malignancy. The affected skin can be surgically removed or treated by other procedures like topical creams or laser therapy procedures. Your specialist will help you decide what treatment is best for you based on your medical history and the type of skin cancer you have.
A malignancy most often develops on skin exposed to the sun, but can also occur on areas that are not ordinarily exposed to sunlight. Here is a list of the best prevention steps to take:
- Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Wear sunscreen
- Wear clothing that covers your skin
- Wear sunglasses and a broad-brimmed hat
- Avoid tanning beds and tan-accelerating products
- Be aware of medications that may make your skin more sensitive
- Have regular checkups to examine your skin
While not all skin cancers may be prevented, the steps listed above will help you protect your skin as much as possible.
