What Are Vascular Anomalies?
The most common vascular anomaly is a mark that many of us recognize as a birthmark, but it is actually a defect (or problem) in the blood vessels. Vascular anomalies include blood vessels, such as arteries, veins, lymphatic vessels, or capillaries—that have developed abnormally. Blood vessels can increase in size and number, creating reddish spots or growths.
What Causes Vascular Anomalies?
Vascular anomalies happen when the tubes that carry blood or clear body fluid, called lymph, around the body don’t develop correctly. Not everyone with a vascular anomaly has had it since they were born, but they usually develop soon after birth.
Vascular anomalies can include the following:
- Complex hemangiomas
- Infantile hemangiomas
- Congenital hemangiomas
- Capillary malformations
- Venous malformations
- Arteriovenous malformations
- Lymphatic malformations (sometimes called cystic hygromas)
- Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome
- Kasabach-Merritt syndrome/phenomenon
- Tufted angioma
- Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma
- Venous lymphatic malformations (sometimes called mixed vascular anomalies)
- PHACE syndrome
- Multifocal Lymphangioendotheliomatosis with Thrombocytopenia (MLT)
