Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstruction of Congenital Differences

Congenital differences refer to differences in a person’s function or appearance that they have had since birth. Reconstructive plastic surgery can be performed to create a more normal appearance and/or improve self-esteem (this may also be called cosmetic surgery). A specialist will work with you and your loved ones to determine what kind of treatment to try. These could involve any of the following:

  • Prosthetics (artificial limbs)
  • Orthotics (splints or braces)
  • Surgery
  • Rehabilitation (physical or occupational therapy)

Choosing one of these treatments can help you feel better about yourself, be more independent, learn better self-care and how to adapt to changing situations.
