Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
Hand Fractures
A fracture is a partial or complete break in the bones of the hand. Plastic surgeons, in some cases, may need to reconstruct parts of the hand because of the damage caused by the fracture.
Symptoms of a Fracture
This is a list of the most common symptoms of a fracture. However, each person may experience symptoms differently:
- Pain in the injured area
- Swelling in the injured area
- Obvious deformity in the injured area
- Difficulty using or moving the injured area in a normal way
- Warmth, bruising or redness in the injured area
Specialists in the plastic and reconstructive surgery department take care to fully examine the patient’s hand. They will gather your medical history, ask how the injury occurred and use tests, like an x-ray, MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or CAT (computed tomography) scan to see how far the injury goes. Using the latest techniques, these specialists will advise you on the best way to heal or reconstruct your hand injury.
If the Bone Is Visible
If the bone is visible (called an open fracture), it is considered an emergency. Get immediate medical attention for this type of fracture. When the bone is visible, called an open fracture, the bone sticks out of the skin or the wound is so deep you can see the bone through the skin.
