Spinal Cord Injury

The Intermountain Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Program at University of Utah Health Care assists patients and their families build the strength and flexibility physically and psychologically to adapt to life with a spinal cord injury. Since 1965, an interdisciplinary team of professionals specializing in spinal cord injury have worked together to provide the best medical and rehabilitative care for each patient (LINK HERE TO REHAB CENTER SPINAL CORD INJURY SITE). The mission of the program is to promote, support and realize maximum health and quality of life potential for individuals affected by spinal cord injury or dysfunction. The interdisciplinary team includes the patient and his/her family, physical medicine physician, orthopedic and neurosurgery, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, recreational therapy, social work counseling, psychology, case management, speech/language pathology, respiratory therapy, rehab education, and other consultants as needed. The coordination of care extends from the Intensive Care Unit to the Rehabilitation Center, to going home and promoting an active, healthy life. A key component of the SCI Program is TRAILS (Therapeutic Recreation and Independent Lifestyles). TRAILS promotes health and active lifestyles for individuals with spinal cord injury or disease through the educational, social, and psychological components of recreation.(LINK HERE TO TRAILS SITE). The SCI Program also provides adaptive driving evaluation/training, assistive technology/augmentative communication, community resource referrals, drug & alcohol abuse treatment, IV Home Care, individualized clinical pharmacy teaching, marital & sexual counseling, nutrition services and counseling, outpatient follow-up care, patient and family education, patient and family counseling, rehabilitation engineering, social services, vocational counseling & evaluation, equipment and wheelchair evaluation/fitting, comprehensive wound care and baclofen pump management.
