Health Sciences Report Fall 2004

If One Picture Says a Thousand Words,These Pictures Speak Volumes
By Jason Burgess

The health sciences center has a rich history tracing back 100 years, when 47 students first enrolled in the two-year medical school in 1905. To celebrate and remember this first century, the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library has gathered vintage photographs of education, research, and patient care into a digital archive: the University of Utah History of the Health Sciences Photographs Collection.

A $15,850 gift in 2002 from the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation started the collection, which includes more than 400 images dating back to 1902, according to Joan Stoddart, M.A.L.S., project coordinator and deputy director of the Eccles Health Sciences Library. She is assisted by Valeri Craigle, Web designer.

The digital archive is accessible at It's categorized by some of the entities that make up the health sciences center: School of Medicine, colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health, and the library. Photographs of health sciences administrators and buildings also are included.

Resources for the project have included the U's J. Willard Marriott Library Special Collections Division and Digital Technologies, and the School of Medicine's Medical Graphics and Photography department.

"Contributions are welcome," said Wayne Peay, M.S., director of the Eccles Health Sciences Library, who invites submissions that depict health sciences history. "It's been a fun project, and we hope everyone will enjoy it as much as we have."
