The mission of University of Utah Health Care¿s Utah Center for Reproductive Medicine (UCRM) is all about family, but for many of its patients, family means something more to them once they¿ve experienced the process of overcoming infertility.
In addition to having a new set of twins, 7-month-old Harrison and Christian, Beth and Don Suppes say they have a new, trusted support system thanks to the compassionate care they received. ¿The doctors, nurses, and staff were like family to us,¿ Beth said during the annual UCRM Patient Picnic at Canyon Rim Park in August. ¿They were so caring with the whole situation.¿
Each year, the UCRM staff and doctors invite patients back for a picnic to celebrate and to meet the little success stories ¿ often for the first time ¿ that have changed their parents¿ lives forever. It¿s like a super family reunion; twins, triplets, boys, and girls, all made possible by the quality expertise that comes with more than 25 years of experience. For moms and dads, it¿s also a chance to mingle with others like themselves who understand the emotional and physical challenges of infertility.
Katherine Nielson, the new mom of 15-month-old Caroline and Andrew, says she appreciates the opportunity to be among people who can really relate to her situation. ¿It¿s comforting to see others who have undergone fertility treatments multiple times, which helps me believe that I can do it again, too.¿
For the Suppes, who traveled all the way from Colorado to attend with their boys in tow, the picnic, in a way, marks the end of a journey. Beth says her experience was hard to say the least, describing the treatments she received and the long weeks on bed rest, but it paid off in ways she thought she could only dream of. ¿Now that they¿re here, we can step back and take a breath,¿ she says, ¿and it was all so worth it.¿
The 2010 picnic also served as a celebration of the 5,000th in vitro fertilization treatment performed by the UCRM. As a national leader and a pioneering contributor to the science of fertility medicine, the UCRM has helped many families turn their dreams into reality.
